General Guidelines

Articles should be of interest and relevance to JHJ readers.

Referees will consider the following questions as they read through submitted papers:

  • Is the paper of interest and relevance to JHJ readers? JHJ covers a wide range of topics in foreign language teaching and learning with a focus on experimental studies.   
  • Is the paper clear, coherent, and accessible to JHJ readership?
  • Is there a balance between theory and practice?
  • Are classroom implications made clear?
  • Is an awareness of recent work in the field demonstrated?
  • Do the contents avoid overly specialized knowledge of statistics and terminology?
  • Is the paper limited to 15 references?

Submission Guidelines

  1. All first drafts for the 2008 edition are due on June 30, 2008.
  2. Papers must be no longer than 3,200 words including the two abstracts (maximum 200 words in English, 400 characters in Japanese) and reference  list. A word count should appear at the bottom of papers after the final reference. Note: Each Japanese character counts as one word.
  3. Layout should take the following format: Times 12 point, A4 double spaced, with margins at 30mm top, bottom, left, and right. Pages should be numbered bottom center. The first page should begin with the title, the abstract in English, then the Japanese abstract. Title and headings should be in bold, subheadings in italics. Do not  double space between sentences.
  4. Referencing should strictly follow APA style, similar to the JALT Journal or TESOL Quarterly.
  5. Do not send your article in the body of an email. Send it only as an attachment.
  6. We can only accept attachments that are formatted as a Microsoft Word document, with the file name (Your name JHP, e.g., Pat Smith JHP.)
  7. Please send one attachment.
  8. Send attached Word document by email to: paulstapleton@gmail.com
  9. A title in Japanese and an abstract in Japanese should also be sent,  included within the text of the attached Word file. Please use Osaka,  Honminchi, or other standard Japanese fonts. If you have difficulty  including this in the text, contact the editor for instructions. The abstract should be 200-400 characters long. The text of all papers  should be written in English.
  10. Tables and figures should be created by MS Word and placed in the text where you would want them to appear.
